For whatever reason, people keep poking video games as the reason why people are psychopaths. We keep hearing some idiot politician claiming that whatever recent shooting that happened was the result of whatever recent shooting game that just came out, and that trend will probably continue forever.
However, the geniuses from the University of Oxford and the University of Rochester has revealed some GROUND-BREAKING new information on what it is that’s truly causing angry gamers. Turns out, people don’t actually get angry from playing shooting games (that tend to be piss easy) and instead are getting their blood-boiling from ridiculously hard or cheap games (like the stupid Flappy Bird).
Dr Andrew Przybylski, co-author of the study said the following:
“To date, researchers have tended to explore passive aspects of gaming, such as whether looking at violent material in electronic games desensitizes or aggravates players. We focused on the motives of people who play electronic games and found players have a psychological need to come out on top when playing. If players feel thwarted by the controls or the design of the game, they can wind up feeling aggressive. This need to master the game was far more significant than whether the game contained violent material. Players on games without any violent content were still feeling pretty aggressive if they hadn’t been able to master the controls or progress through the levels at the end of the session.”
Co-author Richard M Ryan says the following:
“The study is not saying that violent content doesn’t affect gamers, but our research suggests that people are not drawn to playing violent games in order to feel aggressive. Rather, the aggression stems from feeling not in control or incompetent while playing. If the structure of a game or the design of the controls thwarts enjoyment, it is this, not the violent content, that seems to drive feelings of aggression.”

No way! Who would have thought that someone who is continuously struggling at something would get angry. I mean, it’s un-flippin’-believable that playing a game that you enjoy wouldn’t make you angry, but playing a game that you aren’t enjoying would! I’m at a complete loss for words!
