I think just about everyone who is able to hold a video game controller knows that, when Microsoft acquired Rare back in the early 2000’s, the company never lived up to their past successes. This company’s last few games developed are Kinect Sports, Kinect Sports: Season Two and Kinect Sports Rivals.
Pretty smelly, right?
Well, these are the same dudes that were once responsible for such classics as the Donkey Kong Country series, Golden 007, and Banjo Kazooie, to name a few. So, what in God’s name has happened to this once-great developer?
Who knows and he won’t tell me.
However, Xbox head Phil Spencer has gone on record that the once great developer Rare will not remain a creator of only Kinect games. He said the following to CVG at Gamescom:
“I think it’s about them thinking about the next game that’s going to be the next ‘Rare game’ and really stand for what they are. I know they’ve got some great ideas. I’ve not been up to Twycross for maybe six months, but I’m planning on getting up there this fall and seeing bits for the new game. But I know they’re hard at work and Phil Harrison has been up talking to them.”
He goes on to conclude that can be much more than Kinect devs:
“I don’t want the Rare brand to mean Kinect Sports. The Rare brand can be more valuable to them, to us and to gamers than that.”
I think just about anyone on planet Earth would rather have another actual Rare game along the lines of Banjo Kazooie than another crappy Kinect game, so the fact that Xbox will at least acknowledge that that isn’t where they want the developer to remain is good news. Considering the kinect has just been dropped from a new version of Xbox One consoles, maybe the focus is coming off Kinect and this will give them more time to work on something worthwhile.
If you’ve played any game in the Metal Gear Solid series, then you’ll know that the cardboard box is a pretty important element when it comes to stealth. Well, that particular element got the spotlight at today’s Gamescom event, where Hideo Kojima went into detail about what the infamous box is now capable of in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Yes, you read all of that correctly.
As I mentioned, the trailer shows off all of the new things that you can do with the cardboard box. You are now able to pop out of the top of the box, fire at an enemy and then hide back inside the box, display various pictures on the exterior to distract enemies, and even jump out of the side to sneak away while the enemies attention is focused on the box. As you can imagine, there is a hell of a lot you can do with this box.
Other than that, though, there wasn’t much more to say about Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, unfortunately. We know that it’s coming sometime next year, but an exact date is unknown. The game is being developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Check out the new trailer below.
The answer to the question of whether or not the progress you made in the recent Destiny beta would transfer over to the full game was up in the air for a long time, but now Bungie has an official answer. Unfortunately, none of the progress you made during the Destiny beta will transfer over to the full game when it releases on September 9th, 2014.
“Since the beta, we’ve continued to tune and adjust the game. The way you earn experience has been adjusted up and down a bunch of times. Items have been added and removed. New features toggled. Although there’s no single monumental change, the sum of the tweaks leaves characters from the beta build in strange shape that would be confusing at best, broken at worst.”
Bungie does reaffirm that this will be the last time that you have to start all over again, as the next time you play the game it will be the full package:
“On September 9, you can create a Guardian who will keep you company for a good, long time. On a long-enough timeline, you might decide to delete him or her and start over again – but that will be your call to make.”
Honestly, I can understand why progress can’t be carried over due to all the changes being made, but it’s still disappointing to lose all of the progress made. Still, I had such a blast with both the Alpha and the Beta that i’m more than willing to start from scratch for a third time, only next time there will be a heck of a lot more to do. September 9th can’t come soon enough!
We knew for a while that two Assassin’s Creed games would be coming this year, and when Assassin’s Creed Unity was announced for current-generation consoles it was expected that the other game’s announcement wouldn’t be too far behind. However, a lot of time passed and we still didn’t hear one word about this supposed last-gen exclusive.
UNTIL NOW! Ubisoft has officially announced that the game that will be coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 exclusively is none other than Assassin’s Creed Rogue. The game is set in the middle of the 18th century during the 7 Years’ War and you control a Templar named Shay Patrick Cormac. It was developed by Ubisoft Sofia in collaboration with Ubisoft offices in Singapore, Montreal, Quebec, Chengdu, Milan and Bucharest, and completes the saga that started with Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
The fantastic Resident Evil GameCube remake that came out in 2002 is getting the remaster treatment. Capcom has announced that they will be remastered the game for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.
As for what this remaster will be doing for the 2002 game, the game is being upgraded to 1080p on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, will have enhanced 3D models and textures, and will contain 5.1 surround sound. The game will also allow you to switch between the game’s original 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9.
You might not have been aware of it previously, but a heck of a lot of people played the Destiny beta. How many people exactly? Well, according to developer Bungie, they calculated 4,638,937 users playing the game in total.
Activision revealed has revealed that this amount of people playing the beta of a brand new franchise is a new record for betas, meaning that Destiny’s success when it releases in September is basically guaranteed.
Bungie CEO Pete Parsons said the following about the huge beta success:
“We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta. We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough, the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we’ll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch.”
Destiny is set to release on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on September 9th, 2014.
Sledgehammer has gone on record saying that their upcoming Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare could really shake up the multiplayer aspect of the Call of Duty franchise.
Co-founder Michael Condrey said the following to OXM about the game’s enhanced movement and control:
“We’ve got heavy weapons, which is sort of another new class, verticality through the boost jump – you can imagine what that does to the multiplayer experience, and then cloak, super-strength, and then off-the-controller changes, like the exo-boost and the exo-slide.
He then discusses a new combo the game will feature:
“We’ve got a really great combo now with the boost jump and then a lethal slam from above. We feel like it’s a pretty fundamental change to the second-to-second combat, as well as the broader linear experience that you see in campaign.”
He ends with how he thinks the exo is revolutionary:
“The shotgun is a close quarters weapon. A short ranged, broad angle weapon like the shotgun is pretty ineffective against a player who can boost out of the way really quickly, right? So there are a lot of really interesting and unique challenges and opportunities, and I think when we talk about MP in more detail you’ll get to see that, but the variety that the new controls and the exo bring to gameplay is pretty revolutionary.”
