Game Informer Reveals 'Evolve' Gameplay

Evolve

Evolve has been a multiplayer-focused shooter that has not been under the radar a bit as of late, but is one that I am eagerly anticipating. This game is coming from Turtle Rock Studios, who’s responsible for both Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, and this game looks to be a spiritual successor to that game. Info was pretty slim on how things would actually pan out, but Game Informer now has about 6 minutes of in-game footage with commentary for you to sink your teeth into.

What’s most notable about Evolve is that the bones of it are very much similar to Left 4 Dead, but taken in a new direction that makes it even more intense. In Evolve you are undertaking in a 4 vs. 1 match in which 4 hunters are trying to take down 1 Goliath. Every participant is controlled by a player, so you will have 4 people working together to take down one lone player. However, even though the Goliath is far-outnumbered, it is his massive size that makes it a fair fight.

What I really liked hearing from this video is that these matches are ones that progress as time goes on, with objectives and focuses changing depending on the circumstances of the situation. For example: when the match starts off, the Goliath is very weak and his main focus is to remain undetected from the Hunters who could at that point kill him easily. As time passes, he will grow stronger by feeding off of things in the level, until he gets to the point where he can easily crush the Hunters.

To add another wrench into this gameplay, there will be secondary objectives that will allow you to win the match if no one is making a move. If the four hunters are hiding due to the power of the Goliath, then that is the Goliath’s cue to go to their base and take down their generators. Likewise, as soon as the match starts it is priority number one for the Hunters to find the weak Goliath and kill him before he becomes a threat.
