Sony has been the trail-blazer for home video disc formats, with the PS2 ringing in the DVD format and the PS3 hailing blu-ray. Now, Sony has made the announcement that the next-gen version of blu-ray will be known as the “Archival Disc” and hold a TON more of memory.
Sony described this dis as being the “”new standard for professional-use, next-generation optical discs, with the objective of expanding the market for long-term digital data storage.” Archival disks will be able to hold 1 terabyte of memory, where current blu-rays hold up to 50 GB.
They released a chart showing a roadmap of what these Archival Discs will be able to achieve over time. Check it out below.
Condemn OR Condone: I guess I saw that this was coming eventually. However, it sounds to me like it will just be a better version of blu-ray? Still, there is no doubt that studios will take this opportunity re-release movies that have already been released a bunch of times. They can smell the money already.
