Sony has announced that their PlayStation 4 console has passed the 5 million mark, with an exact number of 5.3 million units sold being reported. The console hasn’t even launched in Japan yet.

Sony made the announcement this morning as they prepare for the console’s Japanese launch which will be happening on February 22nd. Sony was aiming to sell 5 million copies by the end of the financial year, March 31st, so it’s safe to say that they will have far exceeded their own expectations.

Although no official numbers are available for the Xbox One, it is believed that their units sold lies somewhere around the 4 million mark.
