Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is a murder mystery visual novel that was developed and published by Spike Chunsoft. This game was originally released only in Japan in 2010 on PlayStation Portable, and this new version on the PlayStation Vita is an updated localization. It certainly has a unique concept, being about a high school in which murderous games are being conducted. Students are threatened to be imprisoned in Hope’s Peak Academy forever, with only one way to graduate and escape: murder another student without being identified as the culprit.
So what have the reviews been like for this strange game? Well, they have been overwhelmingly positive, with many 8s and 9s being thrown around and even a handful of 10s.
David Kreinberg of RPG Site was amazed in his review, saying the following: “Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is a thrilling despair-filled adventure all visual fans need to check out. Even those with little to no VN experience should give it a look, as its high energy presentation, likable cast, crazy story, and unique genre-blending gives it a fresh feel that is unlike anything else.”
Kyle Wakeling of The Vita Lounge notes some minor problems with the game, but found them inconsequential: “Danganronpa is an addictive look into one of everyone’s nightmares – being trapped in their school with murderers – and it does so with the finesse of a magician. You may think you know what you’re seeing or what’s going on – but you’re wrong… and that’s part of what makes this game amazing.”
Beck Cunningham of Cheat Code Central wasn’t nearly as impressed as others in her review, saying, “If you enjoy horror, particularly the off-kilter brand of horror at which Japanese creators tend to excel, you should definitely give the game a spin. Just be prepared to be disappointed that it’s more interested in challenging your reflexes than your brain, particularly since having a proper opportunity to solve its mysteries would have been a far more interesting challenge than mastering the simple arcade games that stand in their place.”
Tom McShea of GameSpot also noted some minor gameplay problems, but still says the overall experience is very compelling in his review: “Danganronpa is an excellent adventure with a story that celebrates the human spirit, even during the darkest times, and that optimistic viewpoint made me smile even when everything seemed to be going wrong.”
