One of my most anticipated games for the Xbox One is Sunset Overdrive, developer Insomniac Games’ zany open-world shooter. When it was revealed at last year’s E3, everything I saw made it seem like a game that was oozing personality and creativity. I loved the art-style, the crazy looking characters, the vibrant colors and the fact that it was an open-world game in a great-looking city.
However, ever since then there has been little to no information about this Xbox One exclusive… UNTIL NOW!
You could say that the proverbial cat has been let out of the proverbial bag, as a bunch of new details have emerged that discuss many different aspects of the game.
The game takes place in a world controlled by FizzCo, who is a company that just released a new energy drink called Overcharge Delirium XT, which just so happens to have the minor side effect of transforming the user into a freakin’ mutant!
You control a janitor throughout all of this mayhem, who just so happened to be cleaning up the launch party for the new beverage when all of the crap hit the fan. Before long, all of the new mutants (now dubbed the OD’d) overrun the city and all hell breaks loose. That area of the city has been quarantined which results in you being trapped with all of said mutants.
The section of the city that is quarantined will contain day and night cycles that will always bring something new to the table. You will also encounter factions, who will range from being friendly to being down-right evil. Throughout the city random NPCs will give you sidequests, and your navigation of said city will consist of much wall-running, grinding and mantling as you take on the game’s crazy foes.
The following is a list of currently confirmed weapons in the game:
- High Fidelity – fires ricocheting Vinyl discs
- Roman Candle – Shoots fireworks that burn foes
- TNTeddy Grenade Launcher – fires teddy bears strapped with explosives
- Captain Ahab – Harpoon gun that fires slowly but can destroy crowds with energy drink
- Freeze Gun – Turns OD’d into Christmas ornaments
- AKFU*KYOUUP – No explanation required
The game also incorporates what is called the Style system, which gives you Amp upgrades and level-ups as you progress through the game. Amop upgrades allow you to enhance your weapons as well as adding status effects to melee attacks, and the game allows you to hold 8 weapons in all. Lastly, you will have complete control over character customization, making your character exactly the way you want to.
Sunset Overdrive does not have an official release date, but is expected to receive one at this year’s E3.
