Mario Kart 8 Quadruples Wii U Sales In A Week

Everyone knew that Mario Kart 8 was going to be very important for the ailing Wii U, but now that actual numbers are out and they are pretty darn impressive. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that Mario Kart 8 has quadrupled that sales of the Wii U since it released last week.

Speaking with Polygon, Reggie said the following:

“It’s one of the things I have to do with certain media, remind them, look, for us, the drive toward the holiday began a couple of weeks ago with Mario Kart 8. And that’s off to a fantastic start. For us, on a global basis, and certainly here in the United States, it’s driving hardware, which is great to see.”

Sounds like ol’ Reggie is optimistic about the future, though after an E3 that failed to tout any new big games for the rest of the year I wonder if this momentum can continue. The big names that are coming the rest of this year are Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Super Smash Bros. Wii U. I don’t see Bayonetta 2 being a big hit due to its more mature themes that are at odds with the family-friendly Wii U, and Captain Toad: Treasure Hunter sounds like a download title that might do reasonably well. That leaves Smash as the one huge game Wii U will have for the rest of the year. That is a bit unfortunate.

News Judgment… Mario Kart 8 Could Be Wii U’s “Catalyst”?

Mario Kart 8 is definitely a game that a lot of Nintendo fans have been eagerly anticipating for a while now, and thanks to great reviews it is certainly going to also be selling some Wii U consoles. However, what hasn’t been so certain is just what kind of an impact that this game will have on the struggling Wii U.

Nintendo’s UK Mario brand manager Roger Langford spoke with MCV and said the following:

“I certainly feel that Mario Kart 8 can be the catalyst that will broaden Wii U’s horizons. It’s very important for us that we have a successful launch and continue the promotion throughout the year and beyond.”

My Judgment:

It’s hard to predict how this will impact Wii U, as many people seem to have given up on the system. If this great game is followed by a string of great games, though, then that is when you will see the Wii U truly come into its own. If any game is going to get the ball rolling for the Wii U, then Mario Kart 8 can definitely be the game to do just that. If it doesn’t, well… maybe Nintendo really is screwed!

‘Mario Kart 8’ Gets A Boomerang Flower Test Video

Mario Kart 8 will dropping on gamers’ heads at the end of this month, and if you’re not hyped enough already then Nintendo is doing everything they can to change that. They have just released a new video that shows off one of the new items in the game: the Boomerang Flower.

In the live-action video we have a person sitting in a kart while two scientists are standing by to document the results of the boomerang toss. In typical Nintendo comedic fashion, the boomerang gets thrown and comes back around to take out one of the scientists. Check out that video below.

Mario Kart 8 is developed by Nintendo EAD Group No. 1 for the Wii U and will be released on May 30th, 2014.

Are There 30 Playable Characters In Mario Kart 8?

The character select screen has been captured by the people over at VG247 Italy, and it seems to reveal the amount of characters that will be playabable in the highly-anticipated Kart racer Mario Kart 8.

According to the pic, it looks like there will be 30 playable characters (or potentially 29 with a random slot), and 3 (or 2) unlockable characters. It has been reported that Diddy Kong will be a playable character, making him one of the unlockable characters. Check out the pic below.

Condemn (OR) Condone:

It looks like there won’t be any more major surprises in terms of the roster for Mario Kart 8, but that’s perfectly fine with me. All the characters that I want in the game are in there, and as long as the game’s new mechanics fully deliver on their potential then all is well with the world!

Mario Kart 8 Has Pretty Sweet Pre-Order/Limited Edition Bonuses

If you plan on pre-ordering Mario Kart 8 or even getting the limited edition, then you are in for some pretty sweet goodies. Nintendo has announced that Mario Kart 8 will have bonuses for both versions of the game that feature some Mario Kart-themed collectibles.

Though it is currently only confirmed for Europe, there is a Mario Kart 8 bundle that comes with the game and a blue shell. That’s right, the evil blue shell that mercilessly seeks out and destroys those in first place can be yours in real life!

Likewise, for those who are planning to just pre-order the game will also be getting some cool stuff. You will get a selection of Mario Kart key rings, which include a red shell, gold dash mushroom and bullet bill.
