Final Fantasy VII Remake Gameplay Debuts At PlayStation Experience

Final Fantasy VII Remake Gameplay

The biggest reveal that this year’s PlayStation Experience was gameplay for the highly-anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake, where thousands of fans got to witness how the game plays for the very first time.

Square Enix has assured fans several times that this wasn’t going to be a straight remake, with many changes being made to the core experience to update for the modern age while also staying true to the game’s roots. The gameplay trailer has definitely exemplified that vision, as there are definitely some big changes on hand. We have altered┬ácharacter appearances, a different control scheme, a combat system that now looks similar to Final Fantasy XV… and Barret rocking shades.

Personally, I think it’s looking pretty solid so far, though obviously there are still a lot of questions to be answered. How much of the hardcore RPG mechanics will remain in the game and how much will be replaced by the more streamlined action RPGs that are more common today? I’m hoping that they can successfully blend the best of both worlds, as even though turn-based combat is old hat now there was still something really fun about it that I really miss.

There is still no release date for Final Fantasy VII Remake as Square Enix is still relatively early into the development of the game, but I wouldn’t expect it anytime before 2017. Remember, the long-awaited Final Fantasy XV is still on the horizon and we don’t even have an official release date for *that* yet.
