Lionhead Reveals That ‘Fable Legends’ Will Be Free-To-Play

The next Fable game will be free-to-play and won’t contain any hidden pay-walls.

Well, here’s news that I can’t say I was expecting. Lionhead has revealed that their upcoming RPG, Fable Legends, is going to be free-to-play when it launches this year.

How the system will work is you have free, rotating characters that you can control for a limited time before you are given a new character to play as. If you want to continue to play as the character you were using you can spend in-game coins or real life money, or just wait for the character to come around again with all your stats in check.

What’s even better is that Lionhead confirmed that the entire game will be able to be played for free, with no hidden pay-walls popping up at any point in the game. Fable Legends director David Eckelberry said the following about the game to Eurogamer:

“There are free-to-play games like World of Tanks out there that are very much a pay-to-win kind of experience. For me the better ones for the customers are the ones where you get to enjoy all of the content without paying money. And then you pay if you want to. I want them to have such a fun experience that some percentage of them go, okay I’m going to buy a hero that just came out, or I’ll get a new hairstyle and a cool-looking hood. That’s the kind of feeling we want to generate in our players where, we’ve offered them such a good time that they’re spending time in it that they feel valuable.”

As far as how long it would take to earn enough in-game currency to buy a character, Eckelberry says it will take around two weeks of regular play.

Fable Legends is set to launch sometime this year on Xbox One and PC. Check out the trailer below.
