February 2015 NPD Reveals 3DS Top-Selling Console And Majora’s Mask Top-Selling Game

Nintendo is on top with both the highest-selling console and game.

The February 2015 NPD results are in and it’s Nintendo that found the most success thanks to both the New 3DS and the critically-acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D.

Hardware

The New Nintendo 3DS XL drove overall sales up massively, selling 150,000 units in its first week for a total of 400,000 for the 3DS overall in February. That number is even higher than the leading home console, PlayStation 4, was able to muster up.

Though Sony still had plenty to be happy about in their report, as they claim that the PlayStation 4 had both the best selling hardware and software. The console remains the fastest-selling PlayStation console ever, with now over 20.2 million consoles sold worldwide.

Microsoft is starting to settle in to the runner-up slot for home consoles with the Xbox One, though they’re still pretty happy about where they are. They claimed that the Xbox One sold 84% more than it did in January, proving that the new lower price point is working out big time.

What’s most spectacular about all of this is that, despite all of the fear mongering claiming that console gaming is dying, it’s actually doing better than it ever has. NPD group analyst Liam Callahan claims that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have outsold the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 combined 15 month totals by around 60%. Console gaming is dead, huh?

Software

Software is up 7% year-on-year, with the 3DS charting two exclusives in the top 10. Dying Light continues to sell very well and remains a pleasant surprise for many people, while PlayStation 4’s exclusive The Order: 1886 sneaks into the lower spots despite mediocre reviews. Note that the following charts lists the platform the software sold on in order of highest to lowest sales.

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D (3DS)
  2. Evolve (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC)
  3. Dying Light (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
  4. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC)
  5. Grand Theft Auto V (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)
  6. NBA 2K15 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC)
  7. Dragon Ball: Xenoverse (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)
  8. Minecraft (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4)
  9. The Order: 1886 (PlayStation 4)
  10. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (3DS)

In Conclusion:

The total industry sales were up 8% year-on-year with $956 million. Hardware sales grew 10% year-on-year, while software sales grew 7% year-on-year. So, once again, it’s been another very successful month for the gaming industry.

USA & Global Video Game Software Charts (Week Ending September 27th, 2014)

This week it was all about the FIFA action in the USA, as FIFA 15 released on multiple consoles. Destiny is still going very strong, however, as its numbers are neck and neck with the popular soccer game. Not bad for a 3rd week in the charts.

Elsewhere we have the Wii U’s Hyrule Warriors just missing the 100,000 mark with a total of 99,165. I think this one can be chalked up as a success considering its strange blending of game series and styles, plus the fact that it’s a Wii U game.

Going down the top 25 we see that Minecraft continues its dominance on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, selling 27,247 on the 360 and 19,373 for the PS3. That brings its total sales on the 360 to a staggering 3,063,062, with the PS3 version moving 590,251 units due to a later release date.

Check out the full list of USA video games sales for the week ending September 27th, 2014 below.

Video Game Software & Hardware Sales Charts (Week Ending June 14th, 2014)

Mario Kart wins for stand-alone platform titles, but Watch Dogs continues to dominate overall.

Nintendo continues to hold that big grin on their face, as Mario Kart 8 remains the best selling video game both nationally and globally. The game’s overall sales have climbed to 1,565,412, selling 177,570 copies last week. This, of course, has helped the Wii U immensely, as it sold 68,499 units last week and has now sold 6,394,360 units overall.

However, when we combine the same title being sold on multiple platforms, the clear winner continues to be Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs. The game sold 341,091 copies just last week, bringing its global total to 4,134,030 units overall.

Elsewhere, Nintendo’s 3DS title Tomodachi Life continues to do surprisingly well both nationally and globally, remaining in the top 10 in its 3rd week on the market. I will have a review for the game soon, but for now I will say that it’s a game that both Animal Crossing fans and maybe even non-Animal Crossing fans will greatly enjoy.

That’s all the gabbing I will do in this article, though. Scroll on down to check out the full lists of both software and hardware sales for the week ending June 14th, 2014.
